Purpose and Scope

The Part-time Professional School Counselor provides direction and support students enrolled in and seeking to enroll in the adult high school.  This involves responsible planning, day-to-day management, and monitoring including but not limited to working with students, school faculty and staff, parents, and guardians. Plans, implements, and tracks individual high school graduation plans and post-graduation data; identifying and resolving barriers to graduation; assisting with college and career choices and planning; and facilitating college and/or career transition.  Serves as liaison between the Project Graduation program and postsecondary entities to explore new and/or innovative directions.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Responsible for administration of the virtual registration/enrollment for students in grades 6-12 exclusively (full-time) and/or concurrently (part-time) enrolled in multiple home schools. Provides assistance to students and instructors to problem solve issues that arise related to progress towards academic goals, persistence, and attendance from high school upperclassmen to functioning early college participates. 
  2. Coordinates student referrals to services to help overcome social and economic barriers; follows up on student transition to postsecondary education and career goals.
  3. Identifies and counsels high school students at risk of dropping out and collaboratively works with school based and district personnel to develop a strategic plan to develop credit recovery and alternative options to adapt curriculum and differentiated instruction to meet their needs.
  4. Assist students with setting goals and identifying, planning for, and overcoming potential obstacles and defining steps in education and career planning; builds rapport and trust with students to support successful goal completion; monitors student progress toward goals; conducts follow up with program participants; offers advisement as needed supports instructors and program efforts to infuse instruction with persistence and success strategies. 
  5. Develops or works with local mentoring programs, business and/or community coaches to connect individual students with mentors and career opportunities.
  6. Assist students in the completion of postsecondary enrollment processes which includes, but is not limited to the admission application, course registration, financial aid, and new student orientation registration. 
  7. Participate in Project Graduation sponsored functions that promote college attainment which include post-secondary testing and school sponsored tours.  Assist with professional development dual credit functions throughout the school year. 
  8. Collect, retrieve, and analyze student intake information through PowerSchool student information systems, while also exchanging student information with high school officials in a secure approved manner. 
  9. Attends and participates in ongoing professional development including the EIS system to ensure accurate tracking of graduation cohort data and district supports.
  10. Work with surrounding business and workforce agencies to receive up to date information on high tech industry jobs and skills in demand. 
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field required. Three (3) years related experience required. Seven (7) years of related experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Master's degree and experience with educational technology preferred.

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
